At the initiative of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Glassification.hu is a world-class traveling exhibition of Hungarian contemporary glass art touring Europe from 2023 to 2025. The first such group show in nearly two decades, it aims to raise the profile of Hungarian glass art — a field recognized internationally with prestigious awards yet still underrepresented in the country’s cultural identity. Featuring twenty newly created works by some of the nation’s finest artists, the exhibition celebrates both traditional and innovative techniques, many practiced only by Hungarian masters.

Alongside the artworks, a custom-designed typeface inspired by the dynamics and effects of glass, together with integrated lighting, installation, and graphic design, creates a cohesive visitor experience.

The tour visited nearly fifteen prestigious venues, including The Venice Glass Week and the International Biennale of Glass in Sofia.

CHALLENGES

SOLUTIONS

Showcasing glass artworks proved especially difficult: their reflective surfaces picked up glare from lighting and surrounding objects, making them harder to view and nearly impossible to photograph without environmental distractions. We needed an installation system that not only addressed this issue but could be quickly assembled, easily transported, and adapted to a variety of exhibition spaces.

We designed modular installations that doubled as large-scale lightboxes. These provided a seamless white background and even controlled lighting, eliminating most reflections and distractions. This approach enhanced the visual clarity of the artworks, making them both more striking in person and easier to capture in photographs.

The installation is constructed from a modular system of steel rods, designed to take up very little space when disassembled. This makes it easy to pack, store, and transport between venues. Once assembled, the rods form a robust, stable frame that is strong enough to safely support the fragile glass artworks while maintaining a visually light and minimal presence in the exhibition space.

The installation’s lighting is powered entirely by rechargeable batteries, eliminating the need to rely on on-site electrical connections. This not only ensures a hassle-free setup in any location, regardless of its technical infrastructure, but also provides the flexibility to position the installation freely within the space without being limited by outlet placement.
